Lomaseutu

The name Lomaseutu means Holiday Region. The pleasant small towns of Viitasaari, Pihtipudas, Kinnula and Kivijärvi are located in the northern parts of the Lake District and belong to Central Finland, the Visit Jyväskylä Region. We also call the area the Heart of Finland.

As a holiday destination, the Heart of Finland is a combination of quiet wilderness and scenic lake district. Over the ages, the region has been a natural crossroads for different cultures as it can be reached by land and waterways alike. If you are interested in getting to know the local Finnish way of life and its peaceful pace, the Lomaseutu holiday region is the destination for you. Here you can lodge comfortably in a cottage by a lake and take a sauna like a Finn. We have forests as far as the eye can see and, in the Salamajärvi National Park, you can make a trip to nature as relaxing as you’ve ever experienced. You might even see a rare Finnish forest reindeer along the trail. According to legend, Pihtiputaan Mummo, i.e. the wise Granny from Pihtipudas, resides in her red cottage in these parts, and the spirit of the traditional healer Karoliina Raatikainen roams the woods.

The best way to reach the Heart of Finland is to fly to the Jyväskylä, Oulu, or Kuopio airports and travel the rest of the way by car or bus. The Heart of Finland is located along Highway 4 and the Blue Highway, i.e. Road 77. You can also easily find accommodation along the highways if you decide to continue further from here to Lapland.
